It just so happens, I was chastised this past week over my body language. I was in a very uncomfortable position and didn't hide my feelings well. Yes, I am an open book. One will know, pretty close to what I'm thinking and feeling, at any given time, according to my expression and body language.
Over the course of my life, I have learned several techniques to feel and be more powerful. One is posture. Always stand tall, shoulders back, chest out. Second is, a firm handshake. Always look the other in the eye, get the upper hand, firmly and shake with authority (not with a jerk). A smile also works wonders.
This TED talk took it to another level. Amy was speaking on the science behind a "power pose". You can see one in the photo above. There are several, seated and standing. The premise is to take up space. This pose changes your body chemistry. Testosterone goes up and cortisol goes down following 2 minutes in a power pose.
I'm all for anything that makes me feel more powerful. I had a friend a few years back who always said: "Fake it until you make it." Amy Cuddy took it one step further, going on to say, fake it until you become it!!
When you enter a room with presence, you can feel it. Smile and take possession of your power. If you find yourself closed up, making yourself small, turn it around. It is amazing how this small "tweak" can change everything.
I can make a tangible list of accomplishments in my life helped by this concept.
Try it. . .Fantasizing the freedom to change into someone powerful.
