That, to me, is a big responsibility. If one believes they make no difference they are a fool. The truth is, the smallest of gestures can impact another person forever. Some of the smallest comments or shortest interludes have made the biggest difference in my life. Someone is watching, listening, even if we are not aware of it.
I remember crying to my mother in law about the frustrations of being a young mother. Feeling overwhelmed and unappreciated. She told me then, so many years ago, "Sharon, it's only a season. It will pass." That had to be almost thirty years ago and to this day, her words impact me, my children and maybe, one day, their children. She probably doesn't even remember, I do.
That bit of comfort and advice, applies to everything in life. This too shall pass. It is good to remember, when you are going through hard times, and good times. Savor the moment and take all you can from it. Every experience we have, has potential to teach us valuable lessons. Pass them on to others.
You never know when a word of encouragement, a smile, a hug or just a helping hand will change someone's life.
I heard a story some time back, if it's true I do not know. I do know it illustrates my point: A boy was walking home from school one day carrying many books. At some point he stumbled and they all went flying. Another boy stopped to help him pick them up. That first boy had cleaned out his locker and was going home to kill himself when the kindness of the second boy gave him hope. He is alive today to tell the story.
Just making eye contact, connection with someone will have an impact. Smile whether or not it's returned. You've given someone else a precious gift. The amazing thing is, you'll be happier too. So, fantasize that you have the power to make the world a better place, you do.
