I don't know that I ever compared myself to others, but I do know I was jealous of my best friend, Barbara, for a long time. She and I took very different paths in life.
From the beginning, she was a tall, blond and I was, am, a short brunette. She went the way of a career woman, I started a family. My son was born on her birthday. The first day she met him, he christened her with an overloaded diaper.
As we laughed and talked about our different lives, I told her how I'd been jealous of her for so long. She looked at me with big eyes, and said, that's funny, I was always jealous of YOU! We were quiet for a moment after that, amazed. It made me think. What about me was so special, she would want to be like me? You are the only you there is. Be the best one you can be.
We are going through a lot of turn over at work. There are several people who have gone on to other things, leaving new employees in their place. Yet, they are not replaced. Their loss has left a void, a different atmosphere. You see, the energy, attitude and presence you bring with you, changes the very dynamic and feel of a place.
So, no matter the package you come in, it's your essence, your spirit that is the important thing. Know that you are unique; special and you matter. It makes no difference where you fall in the organizational chart, your very presence changes everything. It is your choice whether you change it for the better or the worse.
I am realizing the more I respect myself and allow the real me out, the happier I am. It has also been a revelation and surprise that those around me, seem to enjoy my presence. Who knew?! So let your personality shine. Smile. Be happy to be who you are, no matter what.
Life is short, live it out loud
Fantasizing the freedom to be who I am with abandon!
