Don't we all have someone in our lives who speaks like that? No thought of you or what you might have to offer a conversation. In fact, they aren't in conversation with you, any old ear would do.
One day, my husband was on a call like that when he put the phone down and resumed what he was doing. I asked him: "Did they hang up?" He said "No, I figured they didn't need me in on the call. I'll pick it up periodically to see if they're still talking." Sure enough this person never knew Ed wasn't involving himself in the committee meeting.
I was so intrigued by that. What if, when my mind raced uncontrollably: I could simply put the receiver down? Let the chatter go by and not participate in it? Give it no attention? Hmmm? I'm not going to lie, it didn't happen just like that, or even any time close to the Ed's phone call.
On Thursday mornings, I meditate with a group of friends. Our Guru, Mike, has taught us how to breath and to let our thoughts float by. Observe them and let them go. Do not absorb them into your space.
As I practiced this day after day, [....no, on Thursday mornings, then maybe Monday, Thursday, Friday... OKAY, hit or miss.] I began to see it work. Now, I at least, am able to stop the committee meeting, change my mind and think about something on purpose. That, I have gotten pretty good at.
A wise man named Paul, in tandem with God, wrote: Philippians 4:8 "And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." New Living Translation
When you can do this on purpose, your life WILL change. I have told those close to me, now I'm telling you. My life situation has not changed much, yet EVERYTHING has changed. "The things you're looking at change when you change the way you look at things." Wayne Dyer.
It is true. So maybe it's time to pick up those rose colored glasses, believe the good in all things and dance in the daisies. For all things work together for good....for those who are free to fantasize a good life.
