Humility in my opinion is a most powerful position to be in. Humility: the quality or condition of being humble; modest opinion or estimate of one's own importance, rank, etc.
A modest opinion of ones self doesn't mean you are self deprecating necessarily. For me, it is simply recognizing everyone's worth as equal. To respect everyone the same. We are all created equal, no matter what our job, our income, our looks, the cars we drive. . .
To treat others with respect and kindness, lifting them up, lifts you up as well. I'm always hearing about the "haters". Or, those people who believe and say; "you're so lucky." Well a little luck doesn't hurt in life, but it's the good attitude, hard work and prudence that makes a successful life.
When we focus on only ourselves, our lives become small and meaningless. On the other hand, when we focus on others, try to make the world a better place, our lives become magical.
It also helps with our health and state of mind, alleviating depression and hopelessness.
I know. I've been depressed and hopeless in my life, more than once. The key to happiness, in all things, is gratitude.
Gratitude for the small things. For the ability to get up out of bed, a shower, food to eat, a new day of miracles and surprises. Hearing the news, which I hate to do, really drives home the facts of life. We know not what a new day will bring. It could be our last.
I've always told my children, don't let something that may or may not happen in the future, steal your today. Today is really all we have.
I had a friend who once told me to write my own obituary. OMG!! How hard was that. At that time, I wasn't really happy with the person I was. It made me think about what my friends and family would say about me if I died during that time.
SCARY stuff. Just the thought of it made me cringe. Thank God, He gave me a teachable spirit. I've been able to listen to criticism, good and bad. Use what I could and threw away the rest.
Fantasizing the freedom to ride the bus with a smile.
